Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics Hires Steve Peeler as Athletic Field & Campus Enhancement Specialist

Nationally Renowned Groundskeeper to Elevate Playing Surfaces and Campus Aesthetics

HICKORY, N.C. — Lenoir-Rhyne University Athletics has announced the hiring of Steve Peeler as Athletic Field & Campus Enhancement Specialist, bringing one of the most respected names in professional turf and field management to campus.

Peeler, a Morganton, N.C., native, joins Lenoir-Rhyne following a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in Major League Baseball, where he served as a senior groundskeeper and field manager at the sport's highest level. Most recently, he was part of the grounds leadership team for the Atlanta Braves. He retired from this position in 2024.

Throughout his career, Peeler has contributed to field operations for multiple MLB franchises, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Minnesota Twins, Florida Marlins, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, and Atlanta Braves. His work has consistently set the standard for field safety, playability, and presentation.

"We are thrilled to welcome Steve to Lenoir-Rhyne," said Daron Montgomery, Vice President for Athletics. "I have known Steve for more than 30 years. His positive attitude and willingness to work hard each day will be a terrific fit for LR and LR athletics. Our coaches and student-athletes will benefit from his expertise and experience."

In his role as Athletic Field & Campus Enhancement Specialist, Peeler will oversee the care, maintenance, and long-term development of all athletic playing surfaces while also contributing to broader campus enhancement initiatives. His work will focus on elevating the quality, consistency, and aesthetics of Lenoir-Rhyne's outdoor spaces—ensuring that facilities reflect the university's commitment to excellence.

"I'm excited to return home and bring what I've learned over my career to Lenoir-Rhyne," said Peeler. "There's something special about creating surfaces that athletes can trust and take pride in. Championship caliber fields and turf will help LR continue to win championships. I'm looking forward being part of the Bears community."

Peeler's hiring reflects Lenoir-Rhyne's continued commitment to providing a first-class environment for its student-athletes while enhancing the overall look and feel of campus for students, fans, alumni, and visitors.
