Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team hit the courts on Saturday against Young Harris and left victorious by a count of 4-1.
The Bears were led by double tandem
Sanne Janssen/Lucy Whelan (6-4) and
Diana Babinets/
Gemma Southwick (6-0) which gave the Bears an early lead with the doubles point.
The only loss for the Bears came in No. 3 singles as
Ally Garofoli fell to Carol Quevedo, 2-6, 3-6. The wins came in straight sets at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots for
Babinets and Janssen respectively. At No. 1,
Southwick took down Jing Dong 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
New Head Coach
Jesse Tarr commented on the fight his team showed in their first official match of the season.
"Young Harris is well coached and competed extremely well," Tarr said. "Our girls did a great job making the right decisions at the right time. I am really proud of the girls. We will enjoy this win today, but need to be ready for a tough Charleston team tomorrow."
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow against University of Charleston.
