Women's Basketball Drops Home Opener to UNC Pembroke 65-56

Hickory, N.C.-- Women's Basketball drops their home opener to UNC Pembroke 65-56. Madeline Hardy had her first double-double of the year; with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Stats of the Game:
  • Bears started red hot jumping out to a 13-4 lead after the 1st quarter.  five different Bears scored in the opening quarter.
  • Second quarter saw the Braves cut the led down to five heading into halftime. Madeline Hardy scored 11 of her 20 points in the first half. 
  • The Braves carried their momentum into the second half outscoring the Bears 22-11 in the third quarter. Braves grabbed the lead with 4:09 left in the quarter and never give it back. 
  • UNC Pembroke shot 18.8% from the field in the first quarter (2-11) but finish the game at 41.9%; shooting 47.6% the last three quarters.  Meanwhile the Bears struggled from the field shooting only 33.9%. 
  • Madeline Hardy grabbed a career high 15 rebounds; Her previous high was 14 on March 6, 2019 against Newberry.
  • Hardy was the only Bears in double figures in points; Kiara Moore and Laney Fox added 6 points off the bench for the Bears.
  • Freshman Ashley Woodroffe pitched in 5 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals for the Bears. 
Beyond the Box Score:
  • In last year game, the Bears were the one that overcame a 11 point first half deficit to beat the Braves 63-58.
  • Braves now leads the all-time series 14-9.
  • Bears have dropped their last three home openers; Their last home opener win was beating Warren Wilson 71-29 in 2016.
  • Today's marks the return of Sophomore Hanna McClung as she returned from injury that cut her freshman season short. McClung averaged 21 minutes a game last year for the Bears as a freshman starting three games.
