Comeback Falls Short as Bears Lose to Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. --  Anderson shot 61 percent from the field in the first half and never looked back, handing Lenoir-Rhyne an 87-79 defeat on Saturday afternoon. The Bears dropped their third straight game as they continue a grueling early-season road swing.

Stats of the Game:
  • R.J. Gunn got the Bears off to a hot start, scoring seven of the first 13 points as LR took a 13-8 lead. However, the Trojans would answer with an 18-0 run to take a 26-13 advantage. 
  • AU went into the break with a 43-32 lead thanks to Quin Nottingham's 19 first-half points. Jason Edwards was a perfect 5-for-5 for 10 points for the hosts while LR was led by 12 points from Gunn. 
  • Anderson extended the lead to 18 points in the second half but the Bears didn't give in. A pair of free throws from Darius Simmons cut the lead to 77-71 with 3:41 to play but Nottingham hit a crushing 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to put the Trojans back up nine. 
  • Nottingham finished with a career-high 36 points on 15-for-23 shooting. Shawn Bernard flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.  
  • Gunn finished with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting and recorded seven boards. Simmons had 14 points and Mason Hawks added 13. 
  • The Bears went just 7-for-26 from long range, converting at a 26.9 percent clip. 
  • LR committed a season-low nine turnovers on the game. 
Beyond the Box Score:
  • This marks the Bears fourth straight loss to Anderson. Abney Center has been a tough place for LR to play, as LR is now just 2-8 since 2010.
  • The matchup featured two of the top scorers in the league. Anderson's Nottingham entered with a league-leading 22.9 points per game, while Gunn was third in the conference at 20.9 points per game. 
  • This marked LR's fourth straight road game and continued a five-game road swing. The Bears have played at home just once this season. 
  • LR drops to 0-3 in conference play for the first time since 2011-12.
