No. 19 Bears Earn Split With UVA-Wise in Home Opener

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team split a non-conference doubleheader against Virginia-Wise Friday in the Bears' home opener. Lenoir-Rhyne won the opener 9-1 in five innings and lost the nightcap 6-3.

STATS OF GAME ONE
  • Savannah Moorefield went 3-for-3 with leadoff home runs in the first and fifth innings. She also scored three runs.
  • Mackensi Swain's grand slam home run highlighted a seven-run fifth inning that led to the Bears' walk-off run-rule win.
  • Ashten Hinkle scored the winning run on Kory Hammett's pinch-hit rbi-ground out.
  • Kylee Leonhardt and Leanna Sherrill contributed to the Bears' 10-hit attack with two hits apiece.
  • Emily Kenley tossed a complete-game four-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks.
  • Virginia-Wise had a run taken off the scoreboard when a runner was ruled to have not tagged home plate on a bases-loaded walk.

STATS OF GAME TWO
  • The Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a throwing error on Erin Boone's sacrifice bunt.
  • Talon LaClair doubled in the bottom of the sixth and scored on Kailey Travis' pinch-hit single to pull the Bears within 5-3.
  • Hammett also had a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning.
  • Starter Brandi Parks tossed 4 1/3 inning and took the loss.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Bear Bash was changed from a Saturday-Sunday tournament to a pair of Friday-Saturday doubleheaders due to threat of rain forecast for the weekend.
  • After hitting two home runs in their first seven games, the Bears erupted for three home runs in game one.
  • Moorefield collected hits in each of her first four at bats in the doubleheader.
