Baseball Finds Itself on the Wrong End of a Walk off to Drop Road Series Against Rollins


Winter Park, Fla. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team scored one in the first and one in the third, but it was the Rollins College Tars who got the walk off suicide squeeze from Cameron Meehan in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Bears in the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon, 3-2. LR lost the series two games to one.

STATS OF THE GAME:
•  The Bears gave junior Alex Shirazi the starting nod for the series finale against the Tars and he worked 4.0 innings on the mound, giving up two runs on three hits and just one walk. The Charlotte native did not strike out any Tars batters. He did not receive the decision as Hunter Martin took the loss as he worked the final 0.1 of an inning in the ninth for Lenoir-Rhyne. Kanan Butler and Kevin LaRosa each made appearances lasting 2.0 innings and gave up one combined hit.
•   The Tars' starter, Garrett Leonard, worked 3.2 innings and gave up two runs on two hits and five strikeouts in addition to four walks. It was their fourth pitcher, Anthony Trovato, who earned the win in one inning of relief, just giving up one hit in the four batters he faced.  
•   Lenoir-Rhyne was led at the plate by Clayton Jeffries, who knocked in both runs for the Bears while having a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a walk. The road team totaled five hits while striking out eight times, walking a total of five times and stranding eight on the base paths.
•    The Tars outhit the Bears with six of their own and three runs to show for it. They stranded six and were led by center fielder and nine-hole hitter Cameron Meehan who went 2-for-4, including the walk off suicide squeeze to win the game and series. Sam LaFontain added two runs batted in to round out the scoring for Rollins.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
•    Pitching was a strong suite on the weekend, as Lenoir-Rhyne's three starters went at least four innings each outing without giving up more than two runs.
•    The Bears were led at the plate by Jeffries with a 4-for-11 weekend (.364 average) in addition to a double and three RBIs.
•    Martin was the only arm in the Bears' bullpen to make multiple appearances on the weekend, throwing 2.0 innings on Friday and 0.1 on Sunday.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bears will host Barton College in the first home game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 6 with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
