HICKORY, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team showed grit against one of the top Division II teams in the nation, erasing a 5-0 deficit against No. 8 Catawba to push across five runs in the eighth inning. However, a five-run 13th inning from the Indians sent Catawba to a 10-5 victory on Friday night.

STATS OF THE GAME:
• The Bears racked up 10 hits, and were led by
Matthew Freeman with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, followed closely by
Dalton Putnam who went 2-for-2 and
Hunter Jackson who finished 2-for-5.
Clayton Jeffries continued swinging a hot bat, knocking in two runs, while Freeman and
E.J. Ranel each drove in one run.
• Lenoir-Rhyne got a strong effort from starter
Alex Shirazi, who worked 6.2 innings, giving up eight hits, five runs, struck out three and walked two. It was Riley Myers who improved to 5-0 on the year after working the final 4.0 of the game for the Indians, giving up just one hit.
Hunter Martin put up three zeroes in extra innings, but struggled in the final inning of his appearance, taking the loss as he gave up three runs on four hits and four walks. He did finish the game with three strikeouts.
• The Bears loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and Jeffries knocked in a pair with a base hit. Freeman would follow with a double to cut the deficit to 5-3 and Jeffries would score on a wild pitch to make the score 5-4. An RBI from Zach Shoemaker evened the game as LR finished the frame with five runs on five hits.
• Catawba loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the ninth but Martin escaped the jam. Catawba would have a runner in scoring position in the 10th and 12th innings but Martin would escape unscathed in each frame.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• Lenoir-Rhyne managed to get their fourth triple in the past two games, giving them seven on the season.
• Shirazi retired the first 10 batters he faced in the game, giving up the first hit of the game in the fourth inning.
