Hawks Catches Fire as Lenoir-Rhyne Comes Back to Beat Carson-Newman

HICKORY, N.C. --- Mason Hawks was absolutely on fire as the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team overcame a 46-35 halftime deficit to beat Carson-Newman 85-80 inside Shuford Gym on Wednesday evening. Hawks hit 7-of-8 from the 3-point line and converted his first seven attempts before misfiring for the first time with 5:04 left to play. Hawks finished 9-for-10 from the field and added a game-high 25 points to go with two rebounds and two assists.

Stats of the Game:
  • A game after tying the program record with 19 made 3-pointers, Lenoir-Rhyne went 15-for-33 and knocked down 45.5 percent of their three-point attempts. The quartet of Darius Simmons, Davion Bradford, Cooper Fowler and Tyson McClain each hit two from long range. 
  • After Carson-Newman opened up a 12-point lead with 16:50 to play in the second half, Lenoir-Rhyne would rally to outscore the Eagles 45-28 of the final 16-plus minutes. A 3-ball from Fowler with 9:52 to play gave the Bears a slim 58-57 lead but the Eagles responded with seven straight and forced an LR timeout. 
  • The six point deficit was erased on back-to-back possessions as Bradford and McClain buried triples. Hawks' seventh three gave the Bears a 72-69 advantage with under six minutes to play. C-N would cut the lead to one on two separate occasions but couldn't regain the lead as LR pulled away late. 
  • In the final 20 minutes, the Bears shot 10-of-17 from long range and went 19-for-30 (63.3 percent) from the field. 
  • Simmons would finish the night with 20 points and Bradford had 10 and four assists. Fowler stuffed the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds and four assists to go with a pair of blocked shots.  
  • Tripp Davis led Carson-Newman with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting and added seven boards and three dimes. EJ Bush had 15 and Reece Anderson finished with 10. Kamil Chapman came off the bench to score 10 and missed just one shot on the night. 
Beyond the Box Score:
  • This is the third straight game Lenoir-Rhyne has been in single digits in turnovers. The Bears turned it over six times against Coker and eight times against Wingate before giving it away just eight times tonight. 
  • The Bears have now won three straight and haven't lost when they reach 80 points. 
  • With the 3-game winning streak, LR jumped from an 11th place tie to a tie for sixth in the SAC standings. 
  • R.J. Gunn scored eight points and surpassed 600 points for his career.
  • Tonight was career win 49 for Everick Sullivan at Lenoir-Rhyne.  
  • Lenoir-Rhyne improved to 13-5 inside Shuford Gymnasium over the past two seasons. 
  • This is the second three-game winning streak for the Bears this season.
