Softball Moves to 14-2 with Sweep of Augusta

Augusta, GA--  The No. 23 Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team swept Augusta in a Sunday afternoon road series. The win gives LR a 14-2 mark as they head into South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday. Leanna Sherrill hit a grand slam in game one and Lauren Rakes dominated the Jaguars bats in game two.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
  • Sherrill was the star in this one. After the Bears were kept off the scoreboard for three innings, the 2B stepped to the plate and erased a 1-0 deficit with one swing of the bat. Sherrill crushed her first career grand slam which was all the offense LR would need. 
  • Savannah Moorefield would add an RBI triple in the fourth as the Bears extended the lead to 5-1. 
  • Talon LaClair added a solo shot in the fifth and Kailey Travis knocked in Lora Beth wood with an RBI single to give LR a 7-1 advantage. 
  • The Jaguars added a run in the bottom of the fifth but never threatened the rest of the way. 
  • Morgan Beeler improved to 7-0 in the circle by tossing 4.1 innings and allowing a pair of runs. Beeler struck out five in the game.
  • Mary Anna Clement came in and slammed the door shut. The junior went 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out two.
  • Moorefield went 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot and LaClair was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. 
STATS OF GAME TWO:
  • Rakes overpowered Augusta in the second game, tossing a complete game with 10 strikeouts. Rakes nearly tied her career-high in K's which was 11 against Limestone. 
  • LaClair's first of two RBIs in game two came in the top of the first, scoring Moorefield. 
  • Kory Hammett drove in Rakes with a single in the second and Rakes crushed a solo shot in the sixth as LR led 3-0. 
  • After Augusta loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, Rakes limited the damage and allowed just a single run. 
  • LaClair would get that run right back in the top of the seventh, driving in Moorefield again. 
  • Rakes struck out 10 of the 30 batters she faced on the afternoon and allowed just five hits. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The doubleheader sweep marks the 10th straight game won by the Bears over Augusta including a pair of 9-1 wins last year in Hickory.
  • With four games left in the month of February, LR is only three wins away from the most wins in any February in program history. The Bears won 16 games in February of 2012 and 2017.
  • Kylee Leonhardt saw her eight-game hitting streak snapped in the first game. Leonhardt had at least one hit in 27 of the last 28 games for the Bears dating back to last year including a 17 game hitting streak to conclude last year.
UP NEXT:  The Bears will open SAC play at Wingate on Wednesday at 1 PM.
