Men's Basketball Season Comes to an End in SAC Tournament Quarterfinal

HICKORY, N.C. ---  The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team suffered a 106-96 loss at No. 23/25 Queens on Wednesday evening, bringing the 2019-20 season to a close for the Bears. LR led by as many as 17 points in the first half but foul trouble caught up to LR in the final 30 minutes of the game.

Stats of the Game:
  • LR and R.J. Gunn got off to a scorching start. Gunn hit his first five shots and had 13 early points as LR ran out to a 28-12 advantage.  
  • A Darius Simmons 3-pointer with 9:35 left in the first half put the Bears on top 31-14 before Queens came roaring back. The Royals would erase that deficit and take a 49-48 lead with three seconds left in the first half before a half-court heave from Simmons banked in to give the Bears a 51-49 advantage at the break. 
  • On the first defensive possession of the second half, freshman center Cooper Fowler was whistled for his fourth foul which caused LR to have to go to the bench early. 
  • In total, the Bears were whistled for 29 fouls on the night and Queens was called for 23. The teams would combine for 75 free throw attempts on the night with Queens marching to the charity stripe 43 times. 
  • Queens took advantage of Fowler's foul trouble by grabbing 10 more rebounds than LR with a 15-9 edge on the offensive glass. Daniel Carr led all scorers with 28 points and Keny Dye added 22. 
  • Gunn finished with 21 as did Simmons who went 11-for-12 from the free throw line. As a team, LR shot 28-for-32 from the free throw line. 
  • Mason Hawks finished with 20 and Gunn brought down 11 boards for a double-double. Fowler finished with 10 points and seven boards. 
Beyond the Box Score:
  • Lenoir-Rhyne has won three of the past five matchups with Queens, including a victory in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament a season ago. 
  • Combined with three players being in foul trouble, freshmen Zim Fields was limited to just four minutes with an injury. 
  • Two players fouled out of the game for LR and three others finished with four fouls. 
  • LR went a scorching 9-for-15 from three in the first half but cooled to just 21.7 percent in the final 20 minutes. 
  • LR made 293 3-pointers on the season, which is the third-most in a season in team history. 
Up Next:  The Bears will prepare for a 2020-21 season that will return all but one member of this year's roster.
