HICKORY, N.C. - In the fall season opener for both the men's and women's tennis teams, the women's team split their day, beating Johnson C. Smith 7-0 and fell to Charleston (WV) 2-5. On the men's side, LR narrowly fell to Charleston 3-4.
For the women, everyone won their matches against Johnson C. Smith. Against Charleston,
Lucy Whelan won a marathon of a match at #4 singles, winning the deciding third set 12-10.
Natalie Lutz also won her #6 singles match 7-6 (5) and 6-2.
On the men's side,
Joel Hemmings and
Mauricio Hernandez won their match 6-3 at #2 doubles, and
Rhodri Atkinson was dominant at #1 singles, winning 6-3 and 6-4. Rounding out the Bear winnners was
Joel Hemmings at #3 singles, winning two hard fought sets 7-5 each.
These were the last fall matches for the Bears. The women kick off their spring season on Jan. 17 at Western Carolina, while the men get underway on Feb. 1 against Gardner-Webb.
