Two First Half Goals Leads Men's Soccer to Win Over Wingate

Hickory, N.C.--The Lenoir Rhyne's Men Soccer team used two first half goals to beat Wingate 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Moretz Sports Complex. Nicolas Bohigues and Victor Cascon found the back of the net to gave the Bears the key SAC win.

STATS OF THE MATCH:

  • In the 15th minute, Bears got on the board with a beautiful pass from Jaime Poza setting up Nicolas Bohigues for his second goal of the season.
  • The Bears extended their lead with a Victor Cascon goal in the 27th minute. Carlos Montoliu Lobo's shot hit the post and bounced right to Cascon, who headed in for his 5th goal of the season. 
  • The Bulldogs thought they had a goal to cut the lead in half right before half but an offsides call took the goal off the board in the 44th minute.
  • The teams played a scoreless second half which saw LR outshoot the Bulldogs 9-8 in the half, with both goalies making four saves.
  • Juan Basabe had his first clean sheet on the season while making six total saves. 
  • Bears finished with a 18-10 shot advantage and a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This is the fourth time these teams have played this calendar year with a possible fifth game during next months SAC conference tournament. The teams went 1-1-1 against each other during the 2021 Spring season. 
  • Bears are now 5-4-1 against Wingate in the last ten matchups including three straight regular season wins in Hickory.
  • Cascon's goal was his 78th career point which ties him for second all-time in program history with Alun Wood.
  • Bears will head into the season finale with 19 points in third place in the SAC and face the SAC champions in Carson-Newman (27 points)
UP NEXT: Bears will conclude the regular season with Senior Night on Wednesday night against Carson-Newman. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
