Bears Upset by UVA Wise in Final Seconds

HICKORY, N.C. – For the second time in the last three games, the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team lost a game in the final seconds, this time dropping a one-point game against UVA Wise. Cameron Whiteside's bucket with 2.7 seconds to play sent the Cavaliers past Lenoir-Rhyne.

STATS AND INFO:
- Tonight served as the final regular-season home game for Lenoir-Rhyne
- UVA Wise entered the game giving up 92 points per night and allowing opponents to shoot over 50 percent but the Bears were held to 70 points and hit 41.3 percent
- Whiteside had a game-high 25 points, with 21 coming in the second half
- R.J. Gunn had 24 for the Bears and hit four of the teams eight three-pointers

FIRST HALF:
- Lenoir-Rhyne came out of the gates hot, scoring nine of the first 11 points
- However, both teams struggled from the floor and each went 12-of-30 from the field in the opening half
- A late 3-pointer by Gunn gave the Bears a 30-28 lead going into the half
- Gunn finished the first half with 12 points and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field

SECOND HALF:
- Thanks to Whiteside, Wise began to take the upper hand and pushed the lead to 65-57 with 4:29 to play
- The Bears battled back and cut the lead to one with 1:02 to play
- After a defensive stop, Zim Fields made a layup with 12 seconds to play that gave LR a 71-70 advantage
- Wise went the length of the court and Whiteside hit a tough scoop shot in the lane that proved to be the game-winner
- The Bears got a decent look to win it from three but it hit off the side of the rim and Wise came out victorious for the third time in their last six games

ABOUT THE BEARS:
-  Gunn went for 24 and added four rebounds while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line
- Darius Simmons added 14 points but was just 6-of-18 from the field
Zim Fields added 11 off the bench to go with five boards and four assists

NOTABLE CAVALIERS:
- Whiteside was 9-of-15 from the field and added five boards and three assists
- Kaeleb Carter chipped in with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting
- Wise shot 50 percent from the field and were the first team all season to commit less turnovers than LR

UP NEXT:
Lenoir-Rhyne will hit the road for the final two games of the regular season, starting with a game at Catawba on Monday at 7 p.m.
