Softball Opens Season with Walk-Off Win; Sweeps Pfeiffer

Hickory, N.C.--Savannah Moorefield's walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th capped off a four-run inning as the Bears came back to beat Pfeiffer 7-6 in game one. In game two, freshman McKayla Watts got her first career win in the circle as the Bears finished off the sweep of Pfeiffer 8-0 to open their 2021 season.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
  • Talon LaClair got the Bears on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the first but the Bears left bases loaded to end the inning. 
  • After the Falcons got two runs in the top of the second, junior Kailey Travis tied it up with a solo blast in the bottom half. It was Travis' first colligate homerun. 
  • Pfeiffer's Makenzie Pennell gave the Falcons a 5-2 lead with a three-run blast in the top of the fourth. The first five runs for the Falcons came with two-outs in the inning. 
  • Freshman Graleigh Hildebran in her official at-bat of her LR career hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 4th.
  • Starter Morgan Beeler went four innings in the circle and struck out seven Falcons but allowed five runs on three hits. 
  • After the Falcons added a run in the top of the 7th, the Bears walked it off with four runs in the bottom of the 7th. 
  • Leanna Sherrill, Hannah Jennings and Kendall Osborne each single to lead-off the inning and then a Payton Bryant double and a Travis single tied the game up before Moorefield walked it off with a single down the left field line. 
  • Bryant picked up her first career win as she came in relief in the top of the seventh. 
STATS OF GAME TWO:
  • Moorefield, LaClair and Kylee Leonhardt went a combined 5-11 with three doubles and all five of the Bears RBIs.
  • The Falcons committed four errors in the game which lead to three unearned runs.
  • Freshman Watts threw the complete game shutout allowing just four hits while striking out four Falcons.
  • The Falcons only had one runner reach third during the game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • These two teams met exactly twenty years ago today, the Bears came away with a 1-0 and 5-3 win in Misenheimer as Coach Hollar came away with her 42th and 43th career win for the Bears. With the doubleheader sweep today, Coach Hollar now has 835 career wins in a Bears uniform.   
  • Leonahrdt got her first career start at second base today. 
  • Travis picked up three more hits in the second game. Travis finished the day 5-7 with the homerun and two RBIs.
  • For the second time in the last four home games, Moorefield had a walk-off hit. Savannah's walk-off single beat #1 Young Harris last February 29th. 

UP NEXT:  In a last minute add, the Bears will now host Flager (Fla) for double header tomorrow at 2 PM.
