Bears, Royals Spilt Doubleheader at Durham Field

Hickory, N.C.--Drue Galassi's RBI single in the top of the 9th help the Bears spilt their doubleheader against Queens in Hickory. The doubleheader took place at Durham Field but the Bears were the away team as the games were moved to Hickory with weather concerns in the Charlotte area.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game One Final: Queens 2, Lenoir-Rhyne 0
Game Two Final: Lenoir-Rhyne 6, Queens 4
Records: Lenoir-Rhyne (4-5, 2-4 SAC), Queens (3-7, 2-4 SAC)
Location: Durham Field | Hickory, N.C.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
  • Queens got on the board first with a two-run home run by Nick Melton. This is all the Royals would need in this one as Queens worked around six walks to keep the Bears off the scoreboard.
  • The Bears had their chances early but left five on through two innings.
  • LR was held to a bloop two-out double by E.J. Ranel in the first.
  • Alex Shirazi was excellent with the complete game while striking out eight but the Melton homerun was the difference. Shirazi only allowed one other hit in his six innings.
STATS OF GAME TWO:
  • LR got on the board in the first with a two-run, two-out home run by Nick Clarno. It was Clarno's third home run of the season.
  • After the Royals cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, the Bears got the run back with a Xander Ferlenda RBI single. Ferlenda then came around to score on a Will Jones single to give the Bears a 4-1 lead.
  • The Royals tied the game at four with three unearned runs in the bottom of the 5th. All three runs came with two outs on three straight singles including a bunt single by game one hero Nick Melton.
  • Tanner Moyers pitched five innings, only allowing one earned run while striking out seven in the no decision.
  • LR took the lead for good in the 9th. With one out, David Bell singled and Connor Smith had a pitch hit single. Galassi singled home Bell on an 0-2 pitch and the Bears tagged on an insurance run after a throwing error by the Royals.
  • Hayden Gresham got the win in relief. Gresham did not allow a hit in his three innings of work. Gresham has not given up an earned run in his last twelve innings pitched dating back to last year.
  • Ben Friebel got his first save of the season with a perfect ninth.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The series was moved to Hickory and Queens remained the home game in the games today.
  • Before this weekend series, the only other time the teams have played was in 2019 which was Queens first season with the program. That series was supposed to be played at BT&T park in Charlotte but weather forced changes in that series as well.  The Royals now play their home games at Tuckaseegee Dream Fields in Charlotte, N.C.
  • It was Shirazi's third career complete game in game one.
  • Game one was only the second time in the Ramirez Era the Bears were shut out. LR lost 4-0 at #20 Mount Olive last February 8th.
  • Clarno's home run in the second snapped a fourteen inning scoreless streak for the Bears.
UP NEXT: These teams will finish the four-game series tomorrow at 1 PM.
