Rakes HR, 5 RBIs Helps Bears Split with Newberry

Newberry, S.C.-- Lauren Rakes helped the Bears end their six-game losing streak with a home run and 5 RBIs in game one against Newberry. Rakes also threw a complete game in the circle for the Bears in the 10-3 win. In the nightcap, Bears were held to just four singles as the Wolves came away with a 3-0 win.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
  • Both teams traded runs early in the game before the Bears scored nine runs in the 5th and 6th innings.
  • With the game tied at one in the 5th, Lauren Rakes helped herself with a three-run home run to give the Bears a 4-1 lead.
  • Newberry scratched a run in the bottom half but the Bears pulled ahead with six spot in the sixth inning. Talon LaClair, Lora Beth Wood, and Kory Hammett all had RBIs in the inning and Rakes added a two-run double as well.
  • Seven different Bears had hits including two by Rakes and Hammett. Rakes finished with 5 RBIs as well.
  • Rakes also threw a complete game in the circle striking out seven Wolves to pick up win number seven on the year.
STATS OF GAME TWO:
  • Payton Bryant (1-2) got the start in the circle for the Bears throwing 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs on the afternoon.
  • Rakes came out of the bullpen to throw 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
  • Abigail Valentine went 2-3 for the Wolves with 2 RBIs to lead Newberry at the plate.
  • Bears were held to four singles in this game but left eight on base. 
  • Moorefield went 2-4 in this one for her 63rd multi-hit game. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • LR's six-game losing streak was the first since the Bears lost six straight games in 2003. 
  • With her run in the 6th inning, Moorefield is now tied for 6th in program history with 153 runs scored. 
  • Leonhardt's 11 home runs are the 13th most in a single season for the Bears, a mark that Leonhardt also hit in 2018. 
  • Sophomore Lora Beth Wood started her 50th career game today in the second game. 
  • Game one was Rakes' tenth multi RBI game and first five-RBI game in her career. 
  • With the win in the first game, the Bears clinched a spot in this weekend's SAC Softball Championship. 
UP NEXT:  Bears will turn their attention to the SAC Tournament. Bears will be the No. 7 seed and face No. 2 Anderson Friday at 4:00 PM at Greeneville, Tenn.
