Volleyball Drops Road Match Against Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – In their first road match since September 20, the Lenoir-Rhyne volleyball team dropped a four-setter at Carson-Newman on Friday evening. This is the fourth straight loss at Carson-Newman for the Bears who haven't won in Holt Fieldhouse since 2017.

STATS OF THE MATCH:

  • Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to the early lead in the first set and took seven of the first 10 points in the opening set. However, the Eagles came back and took their first lead at 15-14. 
  • With the lead bouncing back-and-forth, C-N pulled away with 3-0 run to make it 20-17. The Eagles would go on to take the first frame 25-20. 
  • LR came out scorching in the second set and ran out to a 16-5 lead. Leading 19-9, LR saw the hosts start clawing back. The Eagles would pull within five on three occasions but LR would win 25-19. 
  • Sets three and four were all Carson-Newman as the Eagles grabbed wins of 25-13 and 25-12 to take the win and protect home court. 
  • Ashley Hawkins led the Bears with 14 kills and added 21 digs. 
  • Reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week Colette Romp had 12 kills and added a pair of blocks. Mackenzie Hulsey totaled 41 assists and nine digs while Bailey Carpenter had 20 digs.
  • Three players had at least 11 kills for the Eagles, led by 13 from Julia Wheeler. Taylor Keeran hit .474 with 11 kills and C-N hit .407 and .400 in the final two sets. Taylor added 10 blocks.
  • C-N had nine service aces to just one for the Bears. The Eagles were also +12 in attack errors, commiting just 14 to the Bears 26. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The Bears fall to 15-17 all-time at Holt Fieldhouse.
  • This was a rematch of last season's SAC Quarterfinal that saw LR win 3-1 on their way to a SAC Tournament title. 
  • LR is just 3-8 in the last 11 matches against the Eagles. 
  • The Bears are 4-4 in road games on the year. 
  • LR hadn't scored less that 17 points in a set this year but did so in both the third and fourth sets tonight.
  • It was the sixth time on the year that LR hit below .200 as a team, the Bears are 1-5 in those games. 

UP NEXT: LR will continue its road swing when they head to Lincoln Memorial for a 2 pm match tomorrow afternoon.
