Women's Basketball Moves to 7-0 For First Time in 43 Years

Florence, S.C.-- The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team moved to 7-0 for the first time in 43 years as the Bears held on to defeat Francis Marion 77-76 Monday night in Florence, S.C.  Brandi Hudson scored 17 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Bears to their best start since the 1979 season. LR won their first 15 games that season on their way to a 28-4 year.

STATS AND INFO:
  • Just the second all-time trip to Florence for the Bears. LR defeated the Patriots 76-61 in a 2000 matchup.
  • In all, this is just the fourth meeting all-time and first since the 2011 season. 
  • Emily Harman was named SAC Player of the Week before the game today. 
FIRST HALF:
  • The first quarter saw 13 lead changes as the game stayed within one possession until back to back free throws by Jada Richards gave the Patriots 22-17 lead with 1:02 left in the initial quarter. 
  • The Patriots grew their lead to eight in the second quarter but LR was able to cut it to six heading into halftime. 
  • Bears out shot Francis Marion 48% to 37% in the first half. However the Patriots had 11 offensive rebounds leading to nine second chance points in the half. 
  • Harman lead the Bears with 11 points and four rebounds in the first 20 minutes. 
SECOND HALF:
  • Megan Landsiedel hit back to back three pointers to start the third quarter to give the Bears their first lead since the first quarter. 
  • After Francis Marion opened another six point lead the Bears went on a 9-0 run to close the third quarter fueled by five points from Harman. 
  • The game was tied 64-64 with 5:12 left when Azariah Fields scored on a fast break after an assist from Hudson. Hudson than went on to score the next two baskets to give the Bears a 70-64 lead. 
  • Patriots cut the Bears lead to 75-73 with the ball with seven seconds to play but Aniyah Oliver missed a three point from the top of the key. Harman then went on to drain both of her free throws to give the Bears a 77-73 lead. Lauryn Taylor hits a three with 2.4 seconds left to cut the lead to 77-76 but the Bears dribbled the ball out after a timeout to stay perfect on the year. 
NOTABLE PATRIOTS:
  • Taylor was one of four Patriots in double digits leading Francis Marion with 19 on 7-19 shooting. Taylor added fourteen rebounds for a double-double. Taylor is the first player to get a double-double this year against the Bears. 
  • Kiana Lee had 14 while Adams had 13 and Scarlett Gilmore added a dozen for Patriots. 
  • Francis Marion dominated the Bears on the glass with a +14 rebound margin on the evening, led by 14 from Taylor. 
ABOUT THE BEARS:
  • 17 of Hudson's 24 points came in the fourth quarter as the senior had eight field goals and went 8-11 from the line. 
  • Fields was on triple double watch this evening with 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in her 38 minutes of action. 
  • After being named SAC player of the week earlier in the day, Harman had a 18 points, eight rebounds and added three more steals. Harman also went 5-5 from the line including the two big ones late. 
UP NEXT: LR will head to Georgia to face Young Harris on Saturday. Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
