Late Call Goes Against LR in One Point Loss

Newberry, S.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne was whistled for a foul 88 feet from their basket with one second left in a time game and Newberry went 1-of-2 from the line to claim a 67-66 victory and end the Bears season. LR would have kept their season alive with a win and a Tusculum loss and advanced to the SAC Tournament but LR fell just short.

STATS AND INFO:
  • With the loss, the Bears finished tied for 8th in the SAC but lost the tiebreak with Tusculum to qualify for next week's SAC Conference Tournament. 
  • Hudson has scored in double figures in 19 straight games and has averaged 19.6 points since the calendar flipped to 2022.
  • McClung's five three-pointers are the most for the senior career in a game. 
FIRST HALF:
  • A pair of baskets by Hudson and a pair of threes from Blaikley Crooks along with a layup from Harman had the Bears running out to an early 13-4 lead.
  • LR shot 4-6 from long range and 78.6% from the floor in the first quarter to open a 26-17 advantage after one.
  • Bears starters played the entire first quarter with Harman leading the group with nine points. 
  • Newberry opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run in the first 4:39 forcing an LR timeout with 5:11 left in the half.
  • The Bears responded after the timeout with a 5-0 run to regain the lead and took the four-point lead into halftime.
  • LR shot only 2-14 in the quarter but did hit all four of their free throws in the quarter.
  • Harman had 11 in the half and Crooks added 10 plus the duo each had five rebounds.
SECOND HALF:
  • McClung went 3-3 from long range in the third quarter to help the Bears open a nine-point lead during the quarter.
  • Wolves Courtney Virgo hit a three right before the buzzer to end the third quarter to cut the lead to 53-48. Virgo's three snapped Newberry 0-10 from deep.
  • Holly Davies tied the game at 60-60 for Newberry with a three with 5:20 left.
  • Newberry took their largest lead of the game at 65-62 with 1:39 left before Harman hit two free throws and a layup to regain the lead for the Bears with just 42 seconds left.
  • Newberry's Giulia Bongiorno tied the game with a free throw with 27 seconds.
  • Harman then missed a jumper with four seconds left and McClung was whistled for a foul when she crashed the offensive glass, sending Bongiorno back to the line with one second left. Bongiorno made the second to give the Wolves the 67-66 win.
  • Newberry shot 7-of-10 in the fourth quarter on their way to a 19-13 advantage in scoring in the final 10 minutes to steal the victory.
ABOUT THE BEARS:
  • Harman finished with a team-high 20 points and played all 40 minutes. Harman added five boards and four assists
  • Crooks poured in a career-high 17 points and had six boards with five on the offensive glass
  • McClung had 15 points and went 5-of-6 from long range
  • Hudson added 12 points and five assists to go with four steals
NOTABLE WOLVES:
  • Ericka Wiseley had a game-high 26 points and went 11-for-12 from the field
  • Giulia Bongiorno had 11 points and four boards
  • Courtney Virgo had nine points and eight boards
