HICKORY, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne women's tennis extended its program record with its 12th straight win, a 5-2 victory over Lees-McRae on Monday afternoon. The Bears won four combined tiebreakers to scratch out the victory over the Bobcats.
In doubles, SAC Player of the Week
Gemma Southwick and
Lucy Whelan won a tiebreaker 7-6 at No. 1,
Alicia Wahlberg and
Diana Babinets won 6-4 at No. 2, and
Sandy Mitsou and
Evgeniya Pugina also won a tiebreaker 7-6 at No. 3.
In singles, Pugina made her first career start at No. 1, and she came through, winning 6-3, 6-2. Wahlberg won a three-set tiebreak 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 at No. 2, and Babinets won 7-5, 1-0 before her opponent retired. Mitsou took care of business 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5, and
Evelin Menyhart finished off the win with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 three-set victory at No. 6.
The Bears continue a busy week at home tomorrow back in SAC play when Coker comes to town.
