Baseball Drops Two Close Games to Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne baseball lost two close games to Catawba on Saturday at Newman Field, 10-7 and 2-1. The Bears were ahead for the vast majority of game one, but eight runs combined in the 7th and 8th innings for Catawba won it for the Indians, and a manufactured run in the 6th inning of the final 7-inning game pushed Catawba over the top.

GAME ONE INFO
  • The Bears scored first in game one and led for the first 7 1/2 innings of the game. Anthony Porrino had a phenomenal series at the plate, driving in the first run of the day with a double that bounced off the wall in the 2nd inning.
  • Cole Laskowski made it a 2-0 game in the 3rd when he came home to score on a wild pitch.
  • A solo home run for Catawba in the 3rd made it a 2-1 ballgame.
  • Luis Atiles drove in the 3rd run of the game for the Bears with a suicide squeeze in the 4th inning, driving in Erick Ramirez
  • Catawba added a run in the 4th to make it 3-2 game.
  • Porrino hit a two-run opposite field home run in the 5th that went off the top of the wall and out. Then, in the 6th, an RBI double from Yniesta off the wall scored Atiles and made it 6-2 Bears.
  • Catawba got three runs in the 7th - helped out by a defensive mistake by the Bears - and it was 6-5 after seven.
  • Yniesta drove in the 7th run for the Bears in the top of the 8th with an RBI groundout to make the game 7-5.
  • Then, the floodgates opened for the Indians in the 8th. A couple of walks and well-placed hits by Catawba snowballed into a 5-run output for the Indians. It was 10-7 at that point, and the Bears went 1-2-3 in the 9th to fall 10-7.
GAME TWO INFO
  • Game two was a much quicker game. Both teams scored runs in the first inning, the Bears on an RBI single from Atiles and the Indians on a sacrifice fly from Zack Miller.
  • The Indians manufactured a run in the bottom of the 6th inning with a walk, a fielder's choice, a stolen base and then a wild pitch scored the 2nd run, which proved to be enough to win the game.
  • The Bears had several chances to score in other innings, but just weren't able to get it done.
  • Joshua Lanham pitched another good game, going all six innings, allowing just four hits and two runs with six strikeouts. He did get the loss, his first of the season.

  • LR left nine men on base in each of the two games today.
  • The Bears lost two of the three games this weekend 2-1, and are 0-7 when scoring two runs or fewer.
  • These two games were the Bears' first two losses this season when scoring first.
