Bears Drop Top-3 Matchup Against No. 1 Tampa

SAVANNAH, GA.-- The No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne men's lacrosse team battled step-for-step with No. 1 and defending National Champion Tampa on Sunday but fell by four goals in the neutral site matchup. The Bears have now dropped three games to Tampa over the past two seasons and fall to 2-7 all-time against the Spartans.

STATS OF THE GAME
  • Bryce Reece got the scoring started at the 10:43 mark of the first quarter and would add his second goal after Tampa evened the game at 1. 
  • The Bears would take a 4-2 edge on Joe Venazio's third goal of the season at the 1:39 mark of the first quarter but the Spartans would have a run to answer.
  • The Spartans would score five of the game's next six goals to take a 7-5 lead into the half. Tampa had two man-up goals in that span. 
  • LR opened the second half with back-to-back goals from Evan Voss and Toron Eccleston to knot the contest at seven with 6:36 to play in the third quarter.
  • However, Tampa would grab the momentum with a 4-0 run thanks to two goals each from Daniel Fitzpatrick and Luke McAnaney.
  • Eccleston broke the Bears' scoreless drought of over 10 minutes with a goal at the 4:27 mark of the fourth quarter and would add another tally 37 seconds later to pull LR within two at 11-9.
  • However, Tampa would score the final two of the game to seal the win.
  • Eccleston led LR with three goals and was one of three players with three points. 
  • Matthew Mancini won 9-of-16 faceoffs on the day and had three ground balls.
  • Fitzpatrick had four goals and an assist for Tampa and Harry Kilkowski had two goals and three assists. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Bears are now 2-6 all-time against teams ranked No. 1 in the nation with both of those wins coming against Limestone. 
  • The Spartans have now won 25 straight games since LR knocked them out of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. 
  • Tampa has also won 41 straight non-NCAA Tournament games.
  • LR has only lost five times in the last two years with three of them coming at the hands of Tampa.
UP NEXT: LR will return to action next Saturday when they host Lewis at noon.
