Baseball Falls Short in Comeback Bid Against Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team splits their regular-season series against Coker with a 9-7 loss on Wednesday.

For the Cobras, they used three big innings to separate themselves from the Bears. It got started early with a two-run first inning followed by a three-run third inning to give them a comfortable cushion.

The inning of the night for the Cobras came in the sixth inning, with a four-run frame to give the hosts the much-needed margin to come away with their ninth win in 12 games.

For most of the contest, the Bears were playing from behind, but there was a time where they were able to tie up the game at five in the sixth inning. And even into the final innings of the play, LR was not backing down with a couple of runs, but it was too little too late for the visitors.

STATS AND INFO
  • The Bears committed four errors in the game, one by four individual players. Coker avoided those similar mistakes with only one error.
  • Neither team did a great job of keeping the batters off base, especially with the hit-by-pitches with three Bears getting hit in the box and four Cobras getting hit at the plate.
  • Sal Carricato had a great day at the plate with a 2-4 evening with six total bases; the redshirt sophomore had his second double and first home run of the year.
  • Both teams had different approaches to their pitching with the Bears using eight pitchers while the Cobras only used two arms; Aaron Diaz threw 126 pitches in 5.2 innings pitched for the Cobras.
  • Blake Bean had another good day with his bat, going 2-3 and leading the Bears with two RBIs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • With the LR loss, the longest winning streak in all-time history is snapped at four.
  • Although the Bears still have a 19-14 record over Coker, they have struggled on the road against the Cobras with a 3-6 record.
  • The Bears are now 2-3 during mid-week matchups; 1-2 on the road with losing back-to-back mid-week games against No. 1 North Greenville and Coker
  • There are only two mid-week road games remaining on the schedule for the Bears; March 28 vs. Limestone and April 24 vs. Belmont Abbey.
  • This current four-game road stretch ties for the longest streak of games away from home for the Bears this season; the other stretch comes from March 28-April 1 with a game against Limestone and a three-game series against UVA-Wise.
UP NEXT: The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team will travel to Anderson, S.C. for their SAC Opening Series against the Anderson Trojans. The three-game set begins with a doubleheader against the Trojans on Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m.
