Bears Earn Split in Opener of USC Aiken Tournament

AIKEN, S.C. -- In the opener of the USC Aiken weekend tournament, the Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team split a pair of 3-0 decisions on the afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Final Match One: Lenoir-Rhyne 3, Belmont Abbey 0
Final Match Two: USC Aiken 3, Lenoir-Rhyne 0
Records: Lenoir-Rhyne (5-2), Belmont Abbey (0-6), USC Aiken (4-2)
Location: Convocation Center

STATS OF THE MATCH ONE:

  • It was smooth sailing in the opener as the Bears won by a 25-15 count in the first set thanks to a .281 hitting percentage. Defensively, the Bears held BAC to a negative hitting percentage and never looked back.
  • LR closed out the sweep with 25-19 and 25-16 victories.
  • The Bears were once again led by Emmaleigh Allen who totaled 14 kills and hit .345 on the afternoon. Taylor Osborne joined her in double figures in kills with 11 while hitting a scorching .611.
  • Allen added eight digs and Sydney Karjala dished out 32 assists.
  • LR hit a season best .322 against the Crusaders to earn the sweep.
STATS OF THE MATCH TWO:
  • In a rematch of last weekend's matchup with USC Aiken, it was the hosts who protected home court. The Bears won 3-2 last Saturday but dropped a 3-0 result in a tightly contested match.
  • Despite coming out of the gates sluggish and dropping 12 of the first 13 points, LR rallied to nearly steal the opening set.
  • The Bears would make it 20-12 before reeling off 10 of the next 14 points to make it 24-22. However, a kill by Sadie McKay ended the comeback and put the hosts up one.
  • In the second set, LR and Aiken once again went back-and-forth. The lead changed hands nine times before it was locked at 22. Aiken would grab the 2-0 advantage by taking the last three points unanswered.
  • The Pacers closed out the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third.
  • Allen had 15 kills and Kathy Peter totaled 10 while hitting .600.
  • Karjala had a double-double with 33 assists and 19 digs.
  • McKay had 18 kills for the Pacers.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • These continue a stretch of seven straight away from home for the Bears.
  • LR has won five straight over Belmont Abbey.
  • This is the second time in matchup history that LR and USC Aiken have played twice in a week. Back in 2016, the Pacers swept a pair in a weeks time over LR.
  • The Bears are just 2-6 all-time at USC Aiken.

UP NEXT: The Bears will face another tough test in the finale of the weekend slate when they take on Augusta at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
