Bears earn first SAC win of season at Emory & Henry

MEADOWVIEW, VA.-- The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball team earned their first SAC victory of the season on Saturday, taking down Emory & Henry on the road 76-59.  Vanessa Jurewicz led a balanced Bear attack with 25 points. This win was Head Coach Grahm Smith's 200th career win in his collegiate coaching career.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Lenoir-Rhyne never trailed in this one, leading 9-0 early.
  • Sarah Burton hit a late layup at the end of the opening quarter to give the Bears a 22-16 lead after ten minutes of play. 
  • Vanessa Jurewicz and Alexandra Merceron scored all 17 points for the Bears in the second quarter, helping lead them to a 39-33 halftime advantage. 
  • Blaikley Crooks helped out with four rebounds and three assists in the opening 20 minutes.
  • After the Wasps cut the lead to one early in the third quarter, the Bears went on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 11.
  • Bears held the Wasps to just ten points in the final quarter as LR pulled away for the 76-59 win. 
  • LR shot 27-61 (44.3%) from the floor and 9-24 (37.5%) from three.
  • Emily Harman (15), Alexandra Merceron (11), and Tilda Lindstroem (10) joined Jurewicz in double digit scoring.
  • Blaikley Crooks finished with a team-high eight rebounds. 
  • The Bears outscored the Wasps 20-5 in fast break points.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Bears move to 4-0 all-time against the Wasps. 
  • After five straight games away from Hickory to open season, LR will play the next seven of eight from home.
  • Alexandra Merceron has scored in double digits in all five games this season.
