Softball Moves to 14-4 With Sweep of Barton

HICKORY, N.C. -- The No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team ran its record to 14-4 with a sweep of Barton to conclude the two day Bear Bash at Bears Field. Pitching dominated today for LR as the Bears kept Barton off the scoreboard for 10 straight innings. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS AND INFO:

  • This is the first time since 2020 that the Bear Bash schedule wasn't affected by rain.
  • The Bears improve to 8-2 at home this year.
  • The Bears are now 8-0 all-time against Barton under Shena Hollar.
  • Before this weekend, LR and Barton hadn't played since Feb. 2018. 
GAME ONE INFO:
  • After each team was scoreless in the first two innings, Lora Beth Wood put the Bears on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with an RBI base hit to score Madison Wilson.
  • LR used a 3-spot in the bottom of the fourth to seal the victory. Camden Gerland reached on a throwing error on a bunt attempt to score Adda Prescott. Four batters later, Julia Mardigian singled to center to score a pair. 
  • Wilson went 2-for-2 with two more walks to extend her streak of consecutive plate appearances of reaching base safely to 15. Wilson added two runs scored. 
  • Prescott was also 2-for-2 with a run and a walk. 
  • Alissa Russ moved to 3-0 in the circle by firing seven shut out innings. Russ struck out seven and walked one while scattering seven hits. 
  • All seven of Barton's hits were singles. 
  • The only extra base hits in the game came off the bat of Prescott who had two doubles. Other than that, the teams combined for 12 singles. 
  • The Bears did draw five walks but struck out 12 times in six innings against pitcher Miranda Holmes. 
GAME TWO INFO:
  • LR put a crooked number on the board in their first trip to the plate. Two batters in, the Bears were up 1-0 as Wilson scored on a triple by Katelyn Rackard.
  • Mardigian added a sacrifice fly to score Rackard and Abbey Nixon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3-0.
  • Mardigian had an RBI double in the second to make it 4-0 and came around to score on a double off the bat of Lani Warren
  • In the third, Wilson doubled to left center to score Nixon and Rackard drove home Kaylan Brown with a sacrifice fly and it was 7-0 Bears.
  • Barton finally broke through with three runs in the fourth on a 3-run home run.
  • Mardigian's second RBI double of the game plated Wilson and Brown and put the Bears up 9-3 in the fifth. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • On the day, Wilson reached base safely eight more times and has a nine straight hits. 
  • For the week, Wilson went 13-for-14 with 12 runs scored and five RBI to go with seven walks. She added four stolen bases in four attempts. 
  • LR drew 11 walks in the two games.

UP NEXT:  The Bears return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Francis Marion for a pair starting at 3 p.m. LR will continue its six-game week with home doubleheaders against Frostburg St. (Saturday) and West Liberty (Sunday).
