Women's Tennis Takes 4-3 Victory at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team prevailed in a thrilling 4-3 match against Carson-Newman to improve to a 6-1 record in the 2023-24 campaign.

After going down in the first set, 3-6, freshman Alexa Allison responded by taking the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4, to win at No. 5 singles and ultimately win the match for the Bears.

To start off the afternoon, Alicia Wahlberg and Nellie Wahlberg pulled out a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 doubles line. While the Wahlberg sisters squared doubles up at one apiece, the Bears could not pull out the first point of the match with a 4-6 defeat at No. 1 doubles.

While falling into an early 2-0 deficit, LR got on the board with Nellie Wahlberg recording a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles. The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden took the match, 7-6, 6-2, to win her third match at the No. 4 line this season.

Despite coming up short in doubles, Runa Muderrisoglu responded with a dominant display at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 result. The reigning SAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week has now won three straight-set victories at that position on the ladder.

With the Eagles winning the No. 2 singles match, the hosts moved back in front with a 3-2 advantage. But the Bears were not done yet as Alicia Wahlberg's won at No. 3 singles in three-set outcome.

The senior took the opening set, 6-3, before dropping the second, 2-6. However, the Stockholm, Sweden native took the most competitive set of the match, 7-5, to stay perfect in singles during 2024.

As Allison closed out the match for the Bears, LR returns to the win column in conference play after Saturday's defeat to Anderson.

UP NEXT: The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team will have a quick turnaround in the schedule as the Bears will face Emory & Henry in Bristol, Tenn. on Friday, March 1.
