Women's Tennis Comeback Bid Falls Short to Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team found themselves on the losing end of a 4-3 thriller against Erskine.

The meeting between these two programs came down to the last match, which was the No. 2 singles line. In a dual between LR's Claudia Orsini and Erskine's Arian Jativa, the two split the first couple of sets to carry the match to a decisive third set. Ultimately, Jativa prevailed to give Erskine the match victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 final.

Despite the exciting ending between these two sides, the match did not begin like that as Erskine jumped out of the gate by securing the first three points.

After winning two of three in doubles, the Flying Fleet picked up straight-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to put them on the verge of victory.

However, the Bears started to turn it around as Runa Muderrisoglu had a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles. The freshman extended her singles winning streak to four with a 7-5, 6-3 outcome.

At No. 3 singles, Alicia Wahlberg found herself in a see-saw match as she took the opening set, 6-2, which was followed by a 2-6 defeat in the second set. In the third set, the senior re-discovered her success and captured a 6-2 victory to keep the Bears' chances alive.

By building off the momentum, Nellie Wahlberg cruised her way in the first set with a 6-0 score, although it did not continue into the second set as the freshman was handed a 4-6 result. With the necessary third set, the Stockholm, Sweden native responded with a 6-3 victory to square the overall match at three wins.

With the result, LR dropped its first non-conference match of the season but still have an impressive 5-2 away record.

UP NEXT: The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team will have a quick turnaround as they face Edinboro (Penn.) on Tuesday, March 5. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from the YMCA of Catawba Valley in Hickory, N.C.
