No. 1 Bears Top Anderson in Conference Opener

HICKORY, N.C. --  The No. 1 Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse Team held off an upset-minded Anderson team in the South Atlantic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon in Moretz Stadium. Jarrett Huff led LR with three goals while Donovan Powell and Sloan Steward each netted a pair. Rob Pensabene made 14 saves for the Bears who improved to 6-0 on the year.

STATS OF THE GAME
  • Landon Parker started the scoring just over two minutes into the first quarter but Anderson answered at the 7:41 mark. 
  • The Bears would go on a 3-0 scoring spurt as Steward scored twice in that span, the first two goals of his LR career. 
  • PJ Fenchak stopped the run with a goal for the Trojans but the Bears would answer with three straight once again. Zack Salo, Brad Maslowski and Powell would put LR up 7-2.
  • Huff netted the Bears second man-up goal of the first half as LR took an 8-3 lead into the break.
  • However, Anderson wouldn't go away and cut the lead to three on two separate occasions. 
  • LR held a 45-33 advantage in shots and 24-22 edge in shots on goal. Each side won 12 face offs. 
  • Victor Powell and Duncan each caused three turnovers for the Bears.
  • Fenchak had a hat trick for Anderson and Ryan Gundersen had two goals. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • This was the first game against an opponent that wasn't ranked in the top 10 in the nation since Feb. 8. 
  • The Bears are now 4-0 at home this season and 11-1 between the bricks over the past two years.
  • LR has held five straight opponents to single digits in the scoring column after giving up 10 to Barton in the season opener.
  • The Bears have scored seven goals on the man advantage this year after scoring two more today.
UP NEXT: The Bears will return to action next Saturday when they travel to undefeated Limestone at 7 p.m. in one of the biggest matchups of the season in the conference.
