No. 25 Bears Use Five Long Balls to Sweep Frostburg St.

HICKORY, N.C. -- The No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team hit five home runs in a dominating sweep of Frostburg St. at Bears Field on Saturday afternoon. LR outscored the guests 20-4 in the two games and improve to 17-5 on the season.

STATS AND INFO:

  • Shena Hollar moves 12 wins shy of 1,000 for her career.
  •  These two teams had never met until today. 
  • LR came into today ranked eighth in the nation in home runs and added five more to their total. 
  • The Bears also rank in the top 10 in the nation in walks drawn coming into today's contest with 78 in 22 games. 
GAME ONE INFO:
  • As much as the bats were the overall story on the day, Lauren Rakes dominated the circle in the opener. Rakes won her fifth game of the year by allowing just two hits in her six inning shut out. 
  • Rakes' final line was 6.0 innings, two hits and six strikeouts in her 105 pitch outing. She got six fly outs and five ground outs. 
  • Katelyn Rackard got the scoring started in the bottom of the third with a two-run triple. 
  • Julia Mardigian singled in her 23 run of the year to score Rackard as the Bears went up 3-0.
  • Rackard hit a solo shot in the fifth and Lora Beth Wood hit a 2-run bomb to make it 6-0.
  • Mardigian walked it off in the bottom of the 6th with a 3-run shot to mercy rule Frostburg St. 
  • Mardigian and Rackard combined to go 6-for-8 with 7 RBI and four runs scored.
GAME TWO INFO:
  • Frostburg St. jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run bomb in the first inning. 
  • The lead would swell to 4-0 after three innings before the LR bats woke up. Madison Primm hit a 2-run homer to center on an 0-1 pitch to make it 4-2. Rackard and Mardigian had RBI hits to tie the game at 4 in the fourth.
  • Abbey Nixon's blast to left made it 6-4 in the fifth and was the game-winning hit.
  • The Bears would plate five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cassidy Wall, Lani Warren and Primm drove in runs and Warren would score on an error as the Bears made it 11-4.
  • Madison Wilson came in to throw the final four innings in relief and didn't allow a single base runner. She struck out four in her dominant outing to move to 4-1. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • LR had eight extra base hits in the first game. In the doubleheader, LR pounded out 14 extra base hits.
  • Mardigian leads the SAC with 27 RBI in 22 games this year. She is hitting .447 with 15 extra base hits.
  • The Bears have 28 home runs as a team. 

UP NEXT:  The Bears return to action tomorrow when they host West Liberty at 1 p.m.
