No. 31 Men’s Tennis Defeats Newberry, 5-2

HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Tennis Team picked up its fourth-straight victory with a 5-2 result over Newberry.

The Bears could not have drawn up a better start in the match by sweeping in doubles to earn the first point of the afternoon.

The No. 2 line of Zachary Cox and Mattias Selde cruised through their match, winning 6-2, while the No. 1 duo of Vadym Rogynskyi and Rufus Plane handled their match in a 6-1 outcome.

While the point was already in hand, Connor Donley and Raphael Champaud closed the door on doubles with their 6-4 victory.

Although he brought up the rear in doubles, Champaud carried the match into singles with his straight-set victory at the No. 5 spot. The sophomore took the first set, 6-2, and had a commanding 5-0 lead in the second, however, his opponent, Thilo Lorenz could not continue and had to retire the match.

The Bears continued to add onto their lead as Plane secured another straight-set victory at the No. 3 line. The sophomore was in control for a majority of the match, as he came out on top in the 6-3, 6-2 outcome to earn his fifth-straight win.

After the Wolves were able to get one match back, the Bears were able to seal the match with Rogynskyi's victory at the No. 2 spot. The sophomore, who has now won seven-straight matches, posted a straight-set victory with his 6-4, 6-3 result.

While the match was already at hand, Joel Hemmings secured one final point for the Bears at No. 6 singles. The senior came out strong with a 6-4 first set victory, but Newberry's Noel Bartz returned the punch with a 6-2 second set.

Despite a traditional third set, the two played a 10-point tiebreaker, which Hemmings was able to prevail in with a 10-5 final.

UP NEXT: The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Tennis Team will have the weekend off before the Coker Cobras make their appearance at the YMCA of Catawba Valley. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26 at 2 p.m.
