Men's Tennis Posts a 7-0 Sweep over Edinboro

HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Tennis Team returned to the win column in its first home contest of the season by defeating Edinboro, 7-0.

For the doubles point, the Bears found themselves in a hole with a loss at No. 2 doubles. However, the No. 1 doubles team of Vadym Rogynskyi and Rufus Plane in addition to the No. 3 doubles team of Connor Donley and Nevio Dux rallied back with respective victories of 6-3 and 6-4. That comeback led LR to secure the first point of the match.

Moving into singles, the Bears got off to a great start with straight-set victories by Rogynskyi and Raphael Champaud.

At No. 3 singles, Rogynskyi cruised his way past Noel Stanislas en route to a 6-2, 6-3 final. Meanwhile for Champaud, the sophomore had the most dominant result of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles.

With a 3-0 lead, the Bears closed out the match at No. 1 singles with a three-set victory by Zachary Cox. The junior took the opening set, 6-3, before dropping the second set, 6-4. The Peterborough, England native eventually recovered in the final set with a 6-3 outcome to give LR the crucial fourth victory.

While the match was already in hand for the Bears, that did not stop the hosts as Dux powered his way through a competitive three-set match. After losing the first set, 7-5, the junior delivered a perfect second set by winning 6-0.

Since the match was already secured, Dux and Edinboro's Gordon Mileusnic played a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the third set, which Dux won, 10-4.

At No. 4 singles, Plane brought back that straight-set success the Bears had earlier in the day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Then for Donley, the freshman won the first set, 6-2, before his opponent had to retire due to an injury.

UP NEXT: The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Tennis Team will return to conference play for its SAC home opener against the Limestone Saints. The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 12 at 2:30 p.m. from the YMCA of Catawba Valley in Hickory, N.C.
