Bears Sweep Newberry in Home Finale

Hickory, N.C.--The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team swept Newberry in their 2024 home finale. In game one, The Bears scored the last six runs to overcome a 3-0 deficit while in the night cap, Madison Primm and Lauren Rakes went deep while Katelyn Rackard had her first four hit game of the season as LR completed the sweep 5-2. The Bears went hit the road for the their last three doubleheaders to close the regular season starting with a trip to Tusculum on Monday.

STATS AND INFO:

  • This would of been Senior Day for the Bears but LR does not have any Seniors on this team. 
  • Bears have not lost to Newberry in Hickory since the 2010 season. 
  • Bears are 23-2 against Newberry in Hickory since Shena Hollar's took over here in Hickory. 
  • Mardigian is still two doubles away from the program record
  • Rakes becomes the sixth pitcher in program history with 60 career wins. 
  • Bears hit their 65 homerun of the season which is good for 4th most in one single season. 
GAME ONE INFO:
  • Newberry got two homeruns in the first inning of the first game to take an early 3-0 lead.
  • Bears then scored the last six runs of the game to take the first game. Bears got four runs in the 4th and a pair in the 6th.
  • Using the long ball all season, The Bears got four straight RBI singles to close their scoring in this game. All ten hits of the Bears were singles in this game.
  • Four Bears had two hits (Julia Mardigian, Katelyn Rackard, Cassidy Wall, and Madison Primm).
  • After giving up three runs in the first, Rakes settled down to throw six scoreless innings and added 11 strikeouts for the complete game and her 14th win of the season.
GAME TWO INFO:
  •  Bears got down early again but Primm and Rakes went back to back in the second inning to give the Bears the lead.
  • After an unearn run stretch the lead to 3-1, Rackard third hit of the day, RBI double gave the Bears a 4-1 lead. Rackard finished with a 4-4 game.
  • Newberry cut the lead to 4-2 with their third home run of the day but Wall RBI single in the 6th give the Bears their fifth run of the game. 
  • Madison Wilson (11-3) picked up the win with the complete game in the circle. Wilson stuck out three while allowing just two runs. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Rakes is now 5th all-time in homeruns in program history with 36 career homeruns.
  • Rakes is up 762 strikeouts and is 18 away from second most in school history. 
  • Bears remain in third place in the SAC, one game ahead of Carson-Newman for 4th. A team the Bears see next week.
  • Bears will log 840 miles next week with trips to Tusculum, Emory & Henry and Carson-Newman to close the regular season. 

UP NEXT:  Bears will hit the road for their last three SAC doubleheaders next week starting with a trip to Tusculum on Monday.
