Baseball Defeats Newberry in Series Opener

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team snapped its five-game losing streak to Newberry with a 7-4 victory in the weekend opener.

After the Bears lead for the first seven innings of the contest, Newberry's Luke Compton tied the game up at four with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

Despite the Wolves swinging the momentum back into its favor, Owen Blackledge broke through with the clutch at-bat with a 2-RBI single, giving the Bears a massive conference win.

Dillon Chapa, who has typically been a Saturday starter for the Bears, got the victory on the mound. The junior produced his longest outing of the season with an eight-inning evening while giving up only seven hits and three runs.

Going into the bottom of the ninth, Cole Bramhall was tasked with the job of bringing the game home for the Bears. Fortunately for LR, the redshirt junior collected his first save of the season by striking out three Newberry batters.
