Bears take down Tusculum in rare Sunday contest

SALISBURY, NC - Playing in a rare Sunday contest due to the effects of Hurricane Helena, the No. 6 Bears persevered, taking down Tusculum by a final score of 37-23. This game took place at Shuford Stadium in Salisbury, North Carolina, the home of the Catawba Indians. 

"This was a solid win with a lot of guys getting an opportunity to play," stated head coach Doug Socha. "As always, I love watching our guys compete."

With the win, Lenoir-Rhyne moves to 4-0 (2-0 SAC), while Tusculum drops to 0-3 (0-2 SAC).

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Tusculum led 3-0 after the first quarter.
  • The Bears scored three touchdowns in three different ways in the second quarter.
  • DeAree Rogers notched a receiving TD, Alex Boyd a rushing TD, and Christian Santana scored on a pick six. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne led 21-3 at the half. 
  • Tusculum struck first in the third, but LR answered with a Jake Brown field goal and another Boyd touchdown.
  • Tye Roberson iced the game with a 32-yard touchdown run late in the fourth. 
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Jalen Ferguson had yet another career game, going 23-for-34 with 351 yards and a touchdown. 
  • Alex Boyd set a career high with 77 rushing yards and two scores.
  • Andre Jefferson finished with seven tackles, 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sacks. He now has 33.5 sacks in his career.
  • Christian Santana's interception was the only pick of the game, and LR's fifth this season.
  • Adonis McDaniel led LR with five receptions for a career high 134 yards.
  • Stewart Simmons averaged 41.2 yards/punt, with a long of 51.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • DeAree Rogers' touchdown was his first of the season and seventh of his career.
  • Christian Santana's interception was the first of his career. 
  • Jalen Ferguson is second in the SAC with average of 268.3 passing yards per game.
  • The Bears are 17-11 all-time against the Pioneers. They have won four straight and 14 of the last 16. 
UP NEXT: The undefeated and #6 ranked Bears will hit the road on Saturday, traveling to Emory, Virginia, to take on Emory & Henry. The Wasps are coming off a 37-24 loss to Limestone earlier today. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
