Bears and Wolves play to a draw in Hickory

Hickory, N.C. -- For the second time this week, the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer team played to a 1-1 draw. An own goal from Newberry in the first half put the Bears on top, but a late Wolves goal dashed Lenoir-Rhyne's hopes of their first conference victory. 

Tomas Fontes made a two huge saves in the 89th minute to keep the Wolves from stealing the win.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • The Bears dominated out of gate, notching two shots on goal and two corner kick opportunities in the first five minutes.
  • LR did get a break in the 22nd minute when Jonas Moos crossed the ball to the front of the net and a sliding Newberry defender kicked the ball into the goal, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. 
  • Filip Tmusic had a chance for the equalizer in the 26th minute for the Wolves, but a jumping save from Tomas Fontes kept the Wolves off the scoreboard. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne was controlling possession in the second half before Newberry's Tomas Queiros settled a long cross and found the back of the net for the equalizer in the 79th minute.
  • In the final minute, Fontes made two point blank saves to keep the game even at 1-1. 
  • The Wolves then had another shot with a few seconds left but once again the Bears defense stepped up and blocked the shot as the buzzer sounded. 
  • LR out shot the Wolves 18-10 and had eight corner kick opportunities. . 
  • Newberry was called for seven offsides in the contest and earned all five of the game's yellow cards.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This is the 30th all-time game between these programs. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne leads the all-time series 22-6-2. 
  • This was Newberry's first point in Hickory since the 2008 season.
UP NEXT: Bears will now face Wingate on Wednesday afternoon. This contest was originally scheduled for Saturday, September 27th, but was moved after weather postponed the original game. Wingate is 2-5 on the season and took down Lincoln Memorial 1-0 earlier today. Kick-off is schedule for 3:30 pm from Wingate.
