Men's Basketball passes century mark for third consecutive game in big win over Lee

HICKORY, N.C. - For the first time since the 1954-55 season, the Lenoir-Rhyne men's basketball team has scored at least 100 points in three straight games. Today's game was a 101-64 point victory over Lee, who came into this one undefeated after defeating Wingate last night.

The Bears are now averaging 93.0 points on the year, which ranks them second in the SAC behind Carson-Newman's 93.3.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: #19 Lenoir-Rhyne 101, Lee 64
Records: Lenoir-Rhyne 4-2, Lee 2-1
Location: Hickory, N.C. | Shuford Arena

STORY OF THE GAME
  • The Bears continued their streak of hot starts, going up 16-5 after a layup from Sam Martin and three from Tyler Burraston.
  • The Flames cut the lead to 24-20 but a quick Julian Dozier three sparked a 15-1 run to go back up 39-21.
  • Two late layups from Conrad Luczynski and another three from Burraston gave the Bears a 48-27 halftime lead.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne's defense shined early in the second half as they didn't allow a single Lee point for the first five minutes of play.
  • During that time the Bears continued to pour it on, going up 62-27 with 15:01 remaining in the game.
  • Lee made a few mini runs but strong shooting from Junior Hodnett and post play from Blessin Kimble kept the lead comfortable.
  • With 37 seconds left in the game, freshman Rogelio Rivera hit a smooth reverse layup to put the Bears over the century mark.
STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Junior Hodnett led five Bears in double figures with 17 points on 6-8 from the field and 5-7 from three.
  • Tyler Burraston was the only other Bear to hit multiple threes, going 4-7 from behind the arc.
  • Amarion Savage led the way with six assists.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne shot 39-60 (65%) from the field and 11-20 (55%) from three.
  • Lee was just 24-63 (38.1%) from the field and 10-33 (30.1%) from three.
  • The Bears won the rebounding battle 42-22 and finished with 54 points in the paint.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This was the first meeting between these two teams.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne's .650 team field goal percentage is the second highest single game field goal percentage in NCAA Division II this year.
  • In their last three games the Bears are averaging 108.6 points.
  • No team in Lenoir-Rhyne history has ever scored 100 points in four consecutive games.
  • The 1954-55 team scored 100 points in six games during a seven game span, but had a 62-53 win over Western Carolina in the middle to break up that stretch.
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne will look to break that scoring record in front of a sold out crowd next Tuesday against Johnson C. Smith. That game doubles as youth day, as over 1,300 kids from Hickory will be in attendance to see the Bears play. Tipoff for this contest is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
