Women's Basketball drops overtime battle at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne women's basketball team fell 86-83 in a hard fought overtime battle with Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon. 

The Bears were led by Aaliyah El's 23 points and her perfect 13-13 shooting from the charity stripe.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • After a 4-0 start for the Bears, the Crusader's went on an 11-0 run to take control.
  • The teams were about even the rest of the quarter and Belmont Abbey led 23-17 after one.
  • Down 34-20, Lenoir-Rhyne scored their final 10 points at the charity stripe, heading into halftime down 38-30.
  • The tables turned in the second half, as an Amiya Porter three put the Bears up 42-40 just two and a half minutes into the third.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne led by as many as eight in the frame, outscoring Belmont Abbey 25-12 in the third.
  • Belmont Abbey stormed back, outscoring the Bears 26-21 in the fourth.
  • Down by two with three seconds left, Aaliyah El was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to send the game into overtime.
  • The Bears struggled from the field in overtime, going just 2-8 from the field and 0-4 from three, giving the Crusaders the chance to win.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Aaliyah El led the Bears with 23 points on 5-15 from the field and 13-13 from the free throw line.
  • Elyseia Brown (16) and Abigail Brown (11) joined her in double figures. 
  • Elyseia Brown nearly notched a double double, finishing with nine boards.
  • Amiya Porter was tops with four assists.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne was 22-73 (30.1%) from the field and 4-22 (18.2%) from three.
  • Belmont Abbey was 28-55 (50.9%) from the field and 4-11 (36.4%) from three.
  • Free throws kept the Bears in it, as they made 35-40 compared to 26-31 from the Crusaders.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Belmont Abbey now leads the all-time series 14-7 and have won the last six meetings.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne's 35 free throw makes came just three shy of the school record of 38 set in 2002. 
  • Aaliyah El, Abigail Brown, and Elyseia Brown are all averaging double figures after four games.
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne continues their road trip on Tuesday when they travel to Bluftton, S.C., to take on USC Beaufort. The Sand Sharks are 2-2 and fell 56-48 at Barton earlier today. Tipoff for Tuesday's contest is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
