Hidalgo's Goal Sends Bears to Regional Final

DAHLONEGA, GA - Facing a North Georgia team that had just two losses all season, Lucia Hidalgo took a pass in the 72nd minute from Rosa Gonzalez and put it in the back of the net to send the Bears to the Southeast Regional championship.

Coach Justin Maullin's squad will be the sixth Lenoir-Rhyne women's soccer teams to play in a regional championship game. (2010, 2011, 2014, 2021, 2023)

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • The Nighthawks went at the Bears in the first half, out shooting them 8-0. 
  • Goalkeeper Riley Miller was up to the task, making four saves in that first half, including a diving save on UNG's Nina Lopez in the 14th minute.
  • Despite the shot disparity, the teams went into the break tied 0-0.
  • After 14 total shots from North Georgia, Rosa Gonzalez was finally able to take the Bears' first shot in the 69th minute.
  • Lucia Hidalgo's goal came just three minutes later and was Lenoir-Rhyne's second and final shot of the contest. 
  • The final big play of the night came from sophomore Ingrid Krakhellen, who blocked what look to be sure goal in the 78th minute.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Riley Miller finished the game with five saves.
  • North Georgia out shot the Bears 17-2 and held a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • UNG led 14-8 in fouls, but neither team was awarded a yellow card.
  • Lucia Hidalgo's goal was her eighth of the season, while Rosa Gonzalez's assist was her first.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Lenoir-Rhyne is 3-0 in regional finals. 
  • This was the Bears' first outright victory over North Georgia in NCAA Tournament play, as they won in PK's in 2014.
  • The Bears had not beaten North Georgia in Dahlonega since 2002. 
UP NEXT: The Bears will face a familiar foe in #5 seed Lander on Sunday, November 30th. The Bearcats upset top seeded Catawba 2-1, scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes. These teams met last year in the first round, with Lander coming away with a 3-2 overtime victory. More information on next Sunday's contest will come out later this week.
