Lenoir-Rhyne fends off Catawba for seventh consecutive win

HICKORY, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne defended Shuford Arena on Wednesday night, taking down the Catawba Indians 75-71. 

Blessin Kimble led a balanced Bears squad with 14 points while Conrad Luczynski nearly picked up his fourth double-double with 10 points and eight boards.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Catawba were the aggressors early, going up 14-6 six minutes into the game.
  • A Sam Martin dunk sparked a 9-2 run that saw the Catawba Indian lead dwindle to three.
  • The Bear defense locked in late in the half, holding Catawba scoreless for nearly five minutes.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne took advantage of the struggling Catawba Indians and took a 35-24 lead with 3:17 remaining. 
  • Two late free throws from Amarion Savage gave Lenoir-Rhyne a 38-31 lead at the break.
  • Junior Hodnett hit two threes early in the second half to keep the Bears lead at nine.
  • The Bears lead was cut to 53-49 with 9:50 remaining in the game before a 9-0 run from Lenoir-Rhyne pushed the lead to 14.
  • Catawba tried to keep it close but Lenoir-Rhyne hit free throws down the stretch to hold on.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Blessin Kimble led the Bears with 14 points while Junior Hodnett was just behind with 12. 
  • Conrad Luczynski was tops with eight rebounds and three blocks. 
  • Julian Dozier had a solid stat line of 10 points, six assists, and five boards.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne was 23-44 (52.3%) from the field and an impressive 9-15 from three (60%). 
  • Catawba took 30 more shots than the Bears, going 27-74 (36.5%) from the field and 7-24 (29.2%) from three. 
  • The Bears had 17 assists on their 23 made shots. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Bears are now 44-38 all-time against Catawba and have won the last five.
  • All but one of those five wins was decided by four points or less.
  • Tyler Burraston and Junior Hodnett have combined to make 48 of Lenoir-Rhyne's 74 threes on the year.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne is the first team in the SAC to reach two conference victories.
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne will be back at home on Saturday when they play host to Emory & Henry. The Wasps are 4-2 and recently opened conference play with a 97-46 loss to Anderson. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., following the 2:00 p.m. women's game.
