Bears defeat Wasps in OT thriller

HICKORY- After a four game road trip, The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball team returned home in thrilling fashion on Saturday, taking down Emory & Henry 92-82 in overtime. 

Aaliyah El scored a career high 33 points, 10 of which were in overtime. Lauren Arnold had her first ever double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • A steal by Peyton Harvey followed by a three from Madilyn Winterton at the buzzer put the Bears within three at 25-22 at the end of the first quarter. 
  • The Wasps came out on fire from the floor, shooting 64% from the floor and 66% from long range in that opening frame.
  • Emory & Henry took a 46-42 lead into the break. 
  • The third quarter saw eight lead changes as the Bears cut the lead to 63-62 heading into the final frame. 
  • Wasps had a 75-68 lead with 3:09 remaining but failed to score the rest of regulation.
  • After a free throw by Abigail Brown, Aaliyah El cut the lead to 75-73 with :45 seconds left. 
  • After the Bears forced a stop on the other end, Arnold grabbed an offensive rebound and her put back tied it at 75-75.
  • The Wasps gaming winning shot missed at the horn as the Bears went to overtime for the second time this season. 
  • Aaliyah El scored 10 of Lenoir-Rhyne's 17 points in overtime to seal the win.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Aaliyah El has 33 points on 13-20 shooting on the floor. This is her fourth straight game with at least 20 points. 
  • Lauren Arnold had her first ever double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. 
  • Emory & Henry shot 90% from the free throw line (20-22) while the Bears only shot 64% (22-34)
  • Elyseia Brown was the third Bear in double digits with 11 points. 
  • The Bears had 50-32 advantage in the paint. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Lenoir-Rhyne is now 6-0 all-time vs the Wasps.
  • This was the first overtime game inside the Shu since February 28th, 2024 vs Wingate. 
  • The Bears only led 6:44.
  • Lauren Arnold has 33 rebounds in her last three games. 
UP NEXT: The Bears will remain home for a mid-week game on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. vs Catawba. Catawba is now 3-4 and 1-1 in the SAC on the season after knocking off previous unbeaten Lincoln Memorial 54-51 today in Salisbury.
