Women's Basketball takes down Mars Hill for key conference victory

Hickory, N.C.--The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball team used a big third quarter to defeat Mars Hill 72-68 inside Shuford Arena. The Bears avenged an early season loss to the Lions as Tilda Lindstroem had her fifth double-double of the season and second this week. 

Lindstroem had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Alexandra Merceron and Emily Harman added 13 points each. The win helps Bears keep pace with the race into the SAC tournament as LR is currently half game out of 8th place.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Both teams struggled from the field early, with the Bears leading 9-2 six minutes into the contest.
  • Mars Hill closed the quarter on an 8-0 run. 
  • The teams combined for 40 points in the second quarter.
  • The Lions led 24-15 before an Alexandra Merceron jumper sparked an 11-2 run. 
  • Sofia Mendez hit a three to give the Bears 30-29 lead at the break. 
  • With the score 38-36 with 6:23 left in the third, The Bears went on a 11-4 run to open a 49-40 lead. 
  • The Bears had a 13 point lead with 9:46 left but the Lions stormed back, cutting it to four with 4:18 to go. 
  • With the Bears up 67-64, Maleiya Hill hit two key free throws to stretch the lead back to five with :39 seconds left. 
  • A late three by the Lions cut it with three but Vanessa Jurewicz iced it with a late free throw. 
  • Mars Hill's Tateyoina Harris had a monster double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds. 
  • Harman and Blaikley Crooks had four assists each. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • The Bears avoid their first sweep by Mars Hill since 2001 with the win today. 
  • Blaikley Crooks is now at 199 career steals with two today. 
  • Crooks is also ten rebounds away from the 500 milestone. 
  • Lindstroem made her 40th career start today. 
UP NEXT: The Bears will host Anderson in the Shu on Wednesday evening. Anderson got a win over Catawba today to move to 11-7 in the SAC and in a tie with the Indians for 4th place. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
