Lenoir-Rhyne pours in 19 goals against Catawba to close out regular season

HICKORY, NC - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Lacrosse team will be heading into the conference tournament on a high note after defeating Catawba 19-3 in their final home game of the season on Wednesday. 

This win secured the #5 seed in the SAC Tournament for the Bears, and they will travel to #4 seeded Anderson on Tuesday to face off against the Trojans in the first round. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Catawba scored the opening goal before LR went on a monster 13-0 run.
  • Alexa Burghardt had a hat trick during that run while Cassell Richardson picked up three assists.
  • The Indians finally scored again with 8:49 remaining in the third quarter, but Ellie Campbell answered just two minutes later with a goal of her own.
  • Kirra Olson scored three of LR's final five goals and the Bears cruised to the 16-goal victory.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Chlose Christensen, Cassell Richardson, Alexa Burghardt, and Kirra Olson each finished with four points.
  • Sally Friesen picked up two saves in the victory.
  • Jayden Wheeler was all over the field, causing five turnovers while notching three assists and picking up two ground balls.
  • Christensen led with seven draw controls.
  • The Bears' defense didn't allow a shot on goal in the second and fourth quarters.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Wheeler's 38 caused turnovers this season rank second all-time in single season Bears history.
  • Kirra Olson is top ten for both single season and career goals.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne is 13-1 all-time against Catawba and have won the last seven.
NEXT UP: Lenoir-Rhyne earned the #5 seed and are set to face #4 Anderson in South Carolina on Saturday. The Bears and Trojans met once this season, with Anderson coming away with an 18-8 win at Anderson on April 9th. A time for the game will be announced later this week.
