Harlow and Wainwright power Lenoir-Rhyne past UVA Wise in the SAC Tournament opening round

HICKORY, NC - The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball team took down UVA-Wise 5-4 in the SAC opening round on Friday night. The Bears scored four of their five runs off a Mackenzie Wainwright grand slam in the bottom of the second inning. 

Picking up the win for the Bears was Andrew Harlow, who went 6.0 innings and struck out eight in the win.

STORY OF THE GAME
  • UVA Wise opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second.
  • With two outs and the bases loaded, Mackenzie Wainwright launched a grand slam to put the Bears up 4-2 after two.
  • It was a pitching duel after that, as Andrew Harlow and UVA Wise's Spencer Powell each shut the opposing team down.
  • With LR leading 5-3 late, UVA Wise scored a run on a Jake Smith RBI triple, but Alex Khan threw him out at home to end the game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Bears are now 4-0 against the Cavaliers this year.
  • No Bear had more than one hit in this one.
  • Wainwright was intentionally walked for the sixth time this year in the bottom of the seventh.
UP NEXT: The Bears will now face #6 seeded Wingate tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the winners side of the bracket. Wingate won 8-1 against Carson-Newman earlier today. A win would advance the Bears to Sunday's 1 p.m. game, while a loss will send them to an elimination game tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
