In 1968, he was drafted into the US Army, attending Officer Candidate School before being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and serving as Jump Master for the 82nd Airborne Division. Among other military honors, Charles was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic service on the battlefields of Vietnam, before being honorably discharged at the rank of First Lieutenant.
