Bears struggle in loss to Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. - Belmont Abbey scored 14 runs over the fourth and fifth innings to pull away from the Bears and win 21-5 on Tuesday night. 

The Lenior-Rhyne pitching struggled in this one as the eight pitchers gave up a combined 18 hits, 15 earned runs, and hit six batters.

STORY OF GAME:
  • Sylas Boris got the game started with a two-run home run in the second.
  • Lleyton Lackey kept the Bears ahead in the third by scoring on a throwing error.
  • The Crusaders scored four in the fourth and 10 in the fifth, sending 16 batters to the plate in that inning.
  • After three more BAC runs in the seventh, Trent Murchison scored in the eighth to stop the 17-0 Belmont Abbey run.

STATS OF GAME:

  • Trent Murchison was the lone Bear with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • The Bear offense produced nine hits but left 11 on base.
  • Hugo Tafoya (3-2) started the game and took the loss.
  • Belmont Abbey's Joe Whitaker was 3-for-5 with seven RBIs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Belmont Abbey sweeps the season series with the Bears.
  • This is Lenoir-Rhyne's worst loss since a 20-4 defeat against Lincoln Memorial in early 2024.
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne will be back to SAC play this weekend when they hit the road to face Tusculum. The Pioneers are 15-27 (9-18 SAC) and fell 14-2 to Carson-Newman earlier today. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
