Late Newberry comeback dooms Lenoir-Rhyne

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry men's lacrosse team went on a late 4-0 run to take down Lenoir-Rhyne 16-15 and advance to the SAC Championship game. 

Donovan Powell led the team with six goals while Owen Peters made 10 saves in net.

STORY OF THE GAME
  • Donovan Powell opened the game by scoring the first three goals for the Bears.
  • Sloan Steward scored a goal with 10 seconds left in the first and the teams were knotted 10-10 after one.
  • Tied at 8-8, Powell and Jarrett Huff scored back-to-back goals to put the Bears up 10-8 at the half.
  • The Bears outscored the Wolves 4-3 in the third and went into the final frame up 14-11.
  • Newberry got hot late in the fourth, scoring four straight goals and winning three straight face-offs to go up on the Bears.
STATS OF THE GAME
  • Eight Bears scored in this one, led by Donovan Powell's eight and Owen Scott's three.
  • Matthew Mancini was 16-27 on face-offs and led with eight ground balls.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne out-shot Newberry 45-39, but the Wolves led 26-21 in shots-on-goal.
  • The Bears coughed it up 18 times, compared to 13 for Newberry.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • This was the second time this year Newberry took down the Bears 16-15. 
  • Prior to tonight's contest Lenoir-Rhyne was 2-0 all-time against Newberry in SAC tournament play.
  • Donovan Powell is now seventh in LR history in points (176) and sixth in goals (121).
NEXT UP: Lenoir-Rhyne will now wait to hear their name called for the NCAA Tournament during Sunday night's selection show. The Bears are currently ranked #4 in the South region and are in a good position to qualify for their sixth straight tournament. The selection show will air on ncaa.com at 7:30 p.m. ET.
