Toovalian and Wainwright lead Bears to victory over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Paul Toovalian allowed just three hits and one run in seven innings on the mound to help propel Lenoir-Rhyne to a 2-1 series opening victory over Newberry.

Mackenzie Wainwright accounted for both of Lenoir-Rhyne's runs, including a game-winning solo home run in the top of the eighth.

STORY OF GAME:
  • Neither team had a hit until Mackenzie Wainwright singled home Sylas Boris in the top of the third.
  • Paul Toovalian held the Wolves hitless until they hit back-to-back singles in the sixth.
  • Newberry scored their only run on a groundout RBI in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Wainwright answered with his 12th home run of the season in the eighth to put the Bears ahead.
  • Michael Burnley came in and threw two strong innings to pick up the save.

STATS OF GAME:

  • Toovalian (3-0) allowed just three hits and struck out four.
  • Wainwright (2), Seth Christmas (2), and Matt Procopio (1) accounted for all of Lenoir-Rhyne's hits. 
  • Newberry's Jacob Clark allowed four hits in eight innings on the mound.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • This is Lenoir-Rhyne's first win when scoring two runs or less since a 2-1 victory over Coker on February 7, 2023.
  • Newberry leads the all-time series 53-43.
