Mya Rivera goal leads Lenoir-Rhyne past Emory & Henry

HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne women's soccer team got back on track Wednesday, defeating a much improved Emory & Henry team 1-0 in Hickory. 

The difference in the match was Mya Rivera, who scored her fourth goal of the season in the 68th minute of the contest, tapping in a rebound off her own shot that hit the post.

STORY OF THE MATCH:
  • Lenoir-Rhyne dominated the opening half, peppering Wasp goalie Sophia Wagner with 19 shots, 11 of which were on goal.
  • Despite the 19-1 shot advantage for the Bears, Emory & Henry's defense held, keeping the game scoreless at the break.
  • The Bears finally broke through in the 68th minute when Ava Hartman crossed it to Mya Rivera, who's original shot hit the post but when right back to her for the easy rebound goal.
  • The Wasps attempted to turn the momentum right after that goal, putting up five shots in the next six minutes.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne's defense held on in the final minutes for the Bears' third shutout of the year.
STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • The Bears out shot the Wasps 29-7 and held a 15-2 edge in shots-on-goal. 
  • Ava Hartman led the way with five shots, four of which were on goal.
  • Madalyn Wright made two saves in net.
  • This was a clean game with only nine total fouls and no cards.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This was the first shutout in Madalyn Wright's collegiate career.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne is 5-0 all-time against Emory & Henry, posting shutouts in four of those games.

UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne will travel to Newberry on Saturday for another South Atlantic Conference match-up. The Wolves are 2-3-1 on the year and most recently defeated Lincoln Memorial 1-0 last Saturday. They face Coker tonight. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. from Newberry, South Carolina.
