Lenoir-Rhyne University Athletics

Tommy Heberer

Tommy Heberer returns for his third year on the sideline for the Lenoir-Rhyne University Men’s Lacrosse Team in 2018.  Heberer is in charge of running the team’s defensive unit and recruiting efforts.

2017 was the most successful year in program history as the Bears won their second consecutive South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship, advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in program history, and finished the year ranked seventh in the country. Heberer led a defense that featured three All-SAC players as well as Collin Lett being named a USILA All-American Long-Stick Midfielder.

In 2016, in his first year at Lenoir-Rhyne University he helped lead the Bears to South Atlantic Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championship Titles.  Heberer also led a defense that ranked among the best in the SAC as four defensive players earned all-league accolades.  Under his tutelage, the defense also ranked third in all of NCAA Division II in man-down defense percentage.

Heberer came to Lenoir-Rhyne after serving as Head Men's Lacrosse Coach at Heritage High School in Leesburg, Va., and as a coach for 3D Lacrosse. At Heritage, he coached multiple all-conference and all-region performers and was named the 2015 U.S. Lacrosse Potomac Chapter Coach Of The Year.

Heberer was also chosen to help with the Under Armour Underclass DC Team in 2015. Previously, Heberer coached at Sidwell Friends High School in Washington, D.C., where he mentored players who eventually landed at the University of Michigan, Wesleyan University, Guilford College and Drew University.

Heberer, a native of Woodbridge, Va., played intercollegiate lacrosse at Wingate University.  As a starting midfielder for the Bulldogs, Heberer helped lead Wingate to its first-ever outright league regular season and tournament championships in 2007. He was also a key member of the "Extra-Man" Offense that ranked in the top five nationally. At Woodbridge High School, he was named All-District (three times), All-Region (twice), and All-State (once).

Heberer, who earned his bachelor's degree in sports enterprise management from Wisconsin-Stout, also holds an associate's degree in professional golf management.
